Ivan Pavlov, founder and director of Team 29, detained in Moscow
In the middle of the night, we learned that our attorney Ivan Pavlov, founder and director of Team 29 (Komanda 29) - an association of lawyers and journalists specializing in freedom of information and constitutional law - was detained in his hotel room in Moscow. His apartment, country home and the offices of Team 29 in St. Petersburg were raided by officers of the Investigation Committee (IK).
The RWI-70 is deeply troubled by this action. We urgently appeal to Russian authorities to immediately release Mr. Pavlov
This afternoon, Pavlov was questioned before the IK. He is apparently charged with violating Article 310 of the Russian Criminal Code, “Disclosure of information relating to a preliminary investigation.” They center around a document and other information Pavlov shared publicly concerning the case of former journalist Ivan Safronov who was charged with espionage and treason last year.
Team 29 regularly takes on the most serious treason cases, including that of prominent physicist Viktor Kudryavtsevwho just died yesterday of cancer yesterday.
The Russian Lawyers’ Association has issued a statement of solidarity and support with Ivan Pavlov and Team 29
Team 29 is determined to carry on. Senior attorney Evgeny Smirnov underscored that the charges against Pavlov “are a blow to the clients we are defending, but work on their cases will continue.”
